The core function of a signal isolator is to establish a safe, non directly electrically connected signal channel between two electrical systems. It is like an 'electrical insulation bridge', allowing signals (data/energy) to pass safely while blocking harmful electrical interference and potential hazards.
Typical applications:
1. PLC/DCS system interface protection
A large number of sensors and actuator signals on site are connected to PLC or DCS systems. Equipping isolators at the front end of I/O cards for each or multiple signals can effectively prevent on-site interference and damage to expensive control system cards caused by faults.
2. Eliminate grounding loops in long-distance transmission
The equipment is far away and scattered in different buildings or areas, making it difficult to unify the grounding system. Connect an isolator in the signal transmission path to cut off the loop current caused by the ground potential difference.
3. Signal connection between different power supply equipment
A PLC system powered by UPS needs to receive status signals from third-party devices (such as large frequency converters and compressors) supplied by the factory power grid. Use an isolator between the two to prevent interference caused by different power grounding wires and to prevent one power failure from affecting the other.
4. Signal allocation and multi device sharing
Scenario: A critical temperature sensor signal needs to be sent simultaneously to the PLC for control, to the display instrument for local monitoring, and to the data logger for storage.
Application: Use a "one in, three out" signal isolation distributor to provide independent signal replicas that are mutually isolated and do not affect each other for three devices, avoiding interference between devices due to impedance and other issues.
5. Signal matching between different types of instruments
Scenario: It is necessary to convert the 4-20mA control signal output by the regulator into a 0-10V signal to drive the frequency converter; Or convert the thermal resistance (Pt100) signal into a standard current signal.
Application: Use isolated signal converters with corresponding input/output types to achieve electrical isolation while converting signal formats.
6. High noise environment
Scenario: Areas with strong electromagnetic interference sources such as high-power motors, frequency converters, wireless devices, and welding machines.
Application: Equip isolators for nearby sensitive measurement signals, utilizing their excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) resistance to ensure signal transmission quality.
